A Beginners Guide to Pathema.

What kind of clothing can my character get?

As you may have noticed when you arrived, the fashion of Pathema is not what most of you would be used to. Until such time as the collared residents of Pathema begin to start their own businesses, many of you will have to make do with the garments worn by the island’s natives.

Similar to what would have been seen in Ancient Greece, clothing as you might know it, usually consists of a large piece of cloth (either cotton or wool) that is fastened using pins, and belted in order to create an outfit. A single piece of fabric is styled and restyled, to fit a particular occasion or a fashion.

Many of the Island Natives weave their own fabric but should you head to the business district, you will find Metaxotó Níma. Not only do they sell (and trade) a vast array of colored fabrics, you will also find a seamstress who may be able to create something a little more to your liking. (See Locations.)

It's also worth noting that undergarments are not commonly worn and therefore, not available for purchase on the island.

**THOUGH now Eros has been kind enough to allow clothing for your characters to show up in a wardrobe in their assigned house. They will not know about this wardrobe when they first arrive until they reach their house or someone tells them.

What kind of things can I buy?

You mean aside from food and clothing? While the FAQ establishes that you’re unable to obtain many of the modern conveniences you may know from home, the Marketplace still has a number of wonderful items available to natives and collared customers alike (though the latter will soon realize they get charged a higher price.)

Perfumes created using essential oils, pottery - both decorative and useful in nature, jewelry made from semi-precious metals and stones can all be found at the various stalls. Spices too, can make your cooking a little more palatable and though you won’t be able to find guns or ammunition, one can find weapons intended for hunting.

All of the items sold at the Marketplace have been hand crafted, picked or killed by the people who own the stalls. Perhaps the more enterprising among you, might be able to find somebody here who will be willing to sell your wares. For a price, that is.

What kind of work is available?

If you’re looking for work available with the natives of Pathema, you’ll soon discover that while you may find some that are willing to give you a chance, the work itself is often unpleasant in nature.

You could always find work at the shipyard, hauling lumber for one of the Shipwrights, or perhaps cleaning the fish that comes in on the morning fishing boats, ready for Market. In the Market itself, many of the stall owners require help in bringing in fresh fruit and vegetables from the storerooms or perhaps you’ll find work helping to pick the very fruit and vegetables that are available for sale.

Much of the work is more casual in nature, the various business owners requiring assistance and hiring people for a few hours each day. It won’t get you rich but it will keep you in food and clothing.

There are other, more established places of employment that may be willing to take you on full-time but these positions are less common than the casual work that is available.

N.B. You do not need Mod Permission to have your character work for a Native Establishment. You just need to reply to the Business Page. As Pathema grows and collared residents begin to open up businesses of their own, you will need the permission of the player whose character runs the business.

How long can I safely push my collar?

While collars do tighten progressively over the course of two weeks, it’s worth noting that the experience becomes painfully uncomfortable, long before you reach the point of death.

  • At the conclusion of your first week without loosening, the collar begins to feel firm against your skin.
  • By day ten, you will have difficulty breathing or swallowing and loosening at this point will reveal bruising where the collar pressed into your skin.
  • In the final days, any form of movement will be extremely difficult as it will cause the collar to shift and cut off your supply of oxygen.

For you to remain more or less comfortable, it’s recommended you do not allow your collar to go much beyond a full week without any form of loosening.

(See the FAQ for more information on Collar Loosening.)

What exactly happens when somebody dies?

Their body goes through a kind of a rapid decomposition but rather than turn into a disgusting mess, it will basically disintegrate.

So about this house Eros gave me?

As the housing section suggests, you’re not getting much out of this but then you’re not exactly paying for it either. It is open plan, with the only door being the front one and it would be fairly easy to break into, though even the more mischievous natives probably wouldn’t bother.

It is however yours to do as you please with, and you should be able to find any number of pieces in the business district or marketplace to make it feel a little more your own. They’re unfortunately what you might call, more weather resistant than weather-proof so they can get very hot in the warmer months, freezing cold in the cooler months and your pottery can conveniently be used as a method of catching water when the rains come.

Only occupied houses have anything in them and Eros personally allocated each collared worshipper their home. He will not take kindly to those who abuse his generosity by trying to move into a different one. Those who attempt it, might find their collar tightening at an alarming rate and while theoretically, it is possible for two people to share a home. There’s barely enough room in them for one person to live comfortably, let alone more.

When you say I’m supposed to worship Eros…

We do mean in the carnal sense, yes. The people of Pathema, show their devotion to him through their various acts of love making and Eros not only wants, but expects his collared worshippers to do the same. He’s not opposed to pulling a few strings in order to make it happen (Curses as they have become known on his Sisters island) but he seeks those who worship him without the need for trickery and games.

Some of you may wish to move out of the homes you were given when you first arrived and for that, Eros fully expects you to show him that you’re willing to embrace the life he’s so kindly offered to you. Just how far would you be willing to go in order to better your lives and appease your new god?
